Festival 2015

May 28 - June 1, 2015 at the Castro Theatre

About

2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival! SFSFF 2015 featured 21 marvelous programs, all accompanied by live music performed by world renowned musicians. Kevin Brownlow treated us to an incredibly interesting on stage interview with Serge Bromberg, himself the recipient of the 2015 San Francisco Silent Film Festival Award!

The Program

SFSFF 2015 presented silent treasures from all over the world, with this year’s program representing China, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, and United States. Our 20th festival also featured a special presentation of footage from Bert Williams: Lime Kiln Field Day, starring the eponymous Carribbean-American performer. The Donovan Affair was accompanied live by Bruce Goldstein and the Gower Gulch Players!

The Musicians

SFSFF 2015 featured a wonderful group of international musicians. This stellar line-up included Berklee Silent Film Orchestra, Frank Bockius, Serge Bromberg, Guenter Buchwald, Stephen Horne, Matti Bye Ensemble, Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, Diana Rowan, Donald Sosin, and Steve Sterner. Live title narration was provided by Paul McGann.

New SFSFF Restorations

SFSFF’s Preservation Department works on film restoration projects year round, premiering the results on 35mm at our annual festival. In 2015, we screened two new restorations – When the Earth Trembled in collaboration with British Film Institute and EYE Filmmuseum, and Sherlock Holmes in collaboration with Cinémathèque Française.
